One of the nicest things about living where we do, is that whenever blue crabs are in season (April - October), we can walk out in the backyard, bait a crab cage, and toss it in the canal. In a few hours, we'll have a nice catch of Callinectes sapidus.
Join the Hawthornes for a little blue crab fun over the span of a few days.

We kept the crabs in a cooler with ice for three days until we had enough to pick for a nice meal. They sleep until they are awakened by a nice hot bath. Pour a little water in the pot- about an inch.
The crabs go in cold. Bring the water to a boil and boil for about 12 minutes.

Happy crab-pickin'!
Man, that is the life!
ReplyDeleteAre there any regulations you have to follow in trapping your own crabs?
Mar, here's the NC Fisheries guide for size and bag limits:

For the blue crab, minimum width of the carapace is 5 inches, maximum is 6 3/4 inches. Bag limit per person is 50 crabs per day, not to exceed 100 crabs per vessel per day.
