The other night,
after I served my Chili Verde,
Mr. Hawthorne wanted peach ice cream.
We had bought some really sweet, juicy peaches
from Food Lion and he wanted a homemade ice cream.
"Betcha can't make it in 30 minutes."
Mr. Hawthorne threw down the gauntlet
and Rosie picked it up.
Rosie loves a challenge.

Let's see.
I started at 8:32 PM.

My ingredients (sans peaches):
1 cup+ 1/2% milk (Maybe 1 1/8 cup.)
heaping 3/4 cup sugar
2 cups whipping cream
vanilla

I added the sugar to the milk, beating.

Then stirred in about 1-2 TB vanilla.

I gradually poured in the whipping cream, beating.
And no, I can't pour, beat, and take
pictures at the same time.

Beat about 1 minute until nice and frothy.

And it's now 8:38.
Just 6 minutes for me to assemble
and mix my ingredients.

I poured the cream mixture into my
Hamilton Beach Ice Cream Machine
and started processing.

While the machine was going,
I peeled 3 peaches.
Yes.
If you look at that photo carefully,
I'm holding the peach with my left hand
and there's my terrific little peeler,
my
Zyliss Soft Skin Serrated Peeler
(which I've posted about before,
here)
just zooming around the peach,
all by itself,
de-fuzzing it.

And I chopped them.

It is now 8:51.
The machine is still going.

I added in my peaches.
Rosie's Tip #163:
When making ice cream, always add in the extra ingredients
(fruits/chocolates/ ...)
during the last few minutes.
I'm thinking chocolate in the future.
Just melt some dark chocolate and
and pour the heated mixture
into the machine the last 5 minutes or so.
Or ...
some RUM RAISIN ice cream.
I never can find Rum Raisin ice cream.
Now, I can make it myself.

Ooooh. Lookee!
Rosie's ice cream is almost done.

And it is 9:06.
Aaaaaack!
34 minutes.
Rosie hangs head in shame.

But we have homemade peach ice cream.
I'm sure I could've taken it out
at 9:02 and it would've been fine.
And I could've shot the picture of my
clock at 9:01, 1 minute under,
and Mr. Hawthorne would be none the wiser.
Yet Rosie, in the name of all that's
decent and honest and holy,
just could not do that.
She waited for the machine to tell her
when the ice cream was ready.
I lost the challenge by 4 minutes.
But I won overall,
as did all the Hawthornes.
The ice cream was delish.

Creamy, rich, and peachy.
you should be able to hack some time off for taking pictures.
ReplyDeleteI do need to invest in an ice cream maker. I have been repeating that a lot lately.
My husband is the ice cream maker in this family. There is nothing better than homemade ice cream. You may have lost the bet but the ice cream is a winner. I'll have to have my husband give peach a try!!
ReplyDeleteHey Rosie, didn't you have a Cuisinart ice cream maker?
ReplyDeleteRosie, I love your blog. Your dishes always look so appetizing. I made your blueberry pie the other night and it was a big hit with my family. Also really enjoy the photos/videos of all of the Hawthorne dogs. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteDonna, You're right about hacking a few minutes off for the pictures.
ReplyDeleteDebbie, have your husband try the peach. It was wonderful.
Martie, yes I have a Cuisinart ice cream maker. For the whole story, see here:

Anonymous, Thanks so much for your kind words and I'm glad the blueberry pie was a hit.
