Back To The Food.

You know I didn't spend all my time in Danville walking the River Walk trail or greeting chartered jets or shooting pictures of historic buildings being demolished.
I spent a bit of time cooking too.
Who'd a thunk?

First off, Saturday night dinner with Maxine.

Maxine always sets a lovely table.

Maxine seasoned wahoo fillets with salt and pepper, butter, lemon juice, basil, and wine, then wrapped them in foil to bake.

I sauteed sliced mushrooms and added them to the wild rice, then sauteed some veggies I'd brought from home - squash, peppers, cucumbers, green onions, tomatoes, jalapeno, and cilantro.

Quite a tasty meal.

Danville, Virginia's Veterans Memorial

On my recent visit to my hometown of Danville, Virginia, dear Maxine took me to the
Veteran's Memorial
at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
I had no idea this place was here.

In the 11th or 12th grade, I was vice president of the Civics Club.
I invited the wife of a VietNam POW to speak at one of our monthly meetings.
I was so impressed and filled with juvenile pride and love of America that
I organized a school assembly in 1969-70 (?) with Dan Daniel as the speaker.
I believe I had letters to our Congressmen for students to sign and send, pleading for the release of POW's in VietNam. I remember I had to give a speech and I remember sitting in my chair on stage still tweaking my speech.
And I remember being proud.
Of my country.
And what little bit I was doing.
I remember watching TV in 1973 in Greensboro and seeing Dr. Kushner, former POW, walking down the steps of a plane, on American soil.
I remember crying.

I left the Veterans Memorial feeling humbled and all a-tingly.
Talk about your hallowed ground.

This was a very humbling experience.
God Bless America.

The Demise Of Dan River Mills.

I had Maxine drive me around one of Dan River Mills' plants that's been part of Danville forever.
This is quite sad.
They're tearing down history.

When I was googling Dan River Mills,
I found this blogger's site.

Sunday Morning River Walk.

Maxine and I started out Sunday morning for our river walk.

Maxine and I started at the opposite end of the river walk Sunday morning.

I love this grove of trees.

Double click to check out the back of Maxine's T-shirt.

Then on our walk, we passed this propane tank.
Sure are a lot of Abercrombies in this town.

Lots of geese and I believe that's a huge ass heron in the background.

A lone fisherman enjoying his Sunday morning.

The trails are lovely.

Oh, crappity, swans, too.

On the way back, the fisherman was still there.

Egret.

I love nature.
