Hello, everyone. I'm back.
Mr. Hawthorne and I took a quick road trip to a friend's 50th birthday party in Greensboro, then he dropped me off in Danville to see Mama Hawthorne and my dear friend Maxine, and he went on to see his family in Bassett.
When we hit Tyrrell County, this is what the smoke from the wildfires was like.
Very thick.
I don't know how the people who live in this area stand it.
It's awful.
We finally got to Greensboro, after passing 4 accidents within a half mile stretch right outside town during a little cloud burst.
When passing this building, Mr. Hawthorne wondered why they would even need a parking lot.
I had no answer for him since I've never understood
why they have Braille on ATM machines.
Here's Maxine fixing breakfast for me.
It sure is nice having someone wait on me for a change.
We went out to Maxine's backyard to sit and have our coffee.
Here are her lovely hydrangeas.
Maxine reading her morning paper.
It's very calm and peaceful out here.
Here's Maxine's fountain which makes me have to pee.
The canopy of trees above.
It's like being in a rain forest.
This is a lovely way to start out the day.
I liked Maxine's chapeau.
Maxine's hydrangea.
After our morning coffee, Maxine took me down to the old train station next to the Dan River where they've made a wonderful walking trail.
Click to enlarge so you can read it.
Here's the view downstream.
Lucky me!
How exciting!.
An Amtrak train goes by.
Here's the view upstream.
I liked this picture of the trestle.
Little duckies sunning themselves.
More views from along the trail.
Maxine checking out the view.
Years ago, my brother used to put in his canoe somewhere around here and paddle down to Daddy's farm, maybe 10-12 miles downstream.
I always wanted to go with him, but was never allowed to since I was just a girl.
Sniff. Sniff.
I had no idea this trail was here.
Apparently it's quite popular with the locals, since we met a lot of families
biking, roller blading, walking, and fishing.
Isn't this nice?
Here's the old train station.
Another old building next door.
Way down town Danville.
Part of the tobacco district.
We're sitting at a stop light and I wanted to get a picture of this mural.
It's depicting the Wreck of the Old '97.
And here are some more pics of the wreck.
And it wouldn't be the Wreck of the Old '97 without
Johnny Cash's version.
Notice they mention White Oak mountain?
That's where Maxine grew up.
Thank you Maxine for your hospitality.
We had fun, didn't we?
