May 20, 2012. The Hawthornes Visit Dinosaur Grounds!

We're in Arizona, traveling from the Vermillion Cliffs
to Tuba City for the night
and we're out in this barren desertscape.
I see a sign announcing DINOSAUR TRACKS.
Well, you know Rosie.

The Hawthornes are going to see DINOSAUR TRACKS!
We not only saw tracks,
we got to see BONES too.

A softspoken Navaho Indian guided us through the area,
pointing out the different tracks and bones,
highlighting them with water
which he would squirt from a bottle
 on the designated areas.

These tracks and bones were discovered
in the 1930s-1940s.

The tracks were formed in the early Jurassic period,
around 200 million years ago.

This is thought to be the footprint from a velociraptor.

 Big footprints.

Indians set up their ubiquitous wears everywhere.

Dinosaur head.

Our Indian guide drew in the teeth.

One can knock on the bones.
They're hollow.

 This is fossilized fecal material.

 Real dinosaur poop!

Or at least that's what we were told.

These are dinosaur eggs,
highlighted with water.

 Bones.

The greenish part in the middle is the marrow.

Said to be T-rex.
I'm not sure,
since T-rex lived 65 million years ago. (?)

 Fossilized rippling of water.

Lea, I was actually thinking about Colin when we were here. I knew he'd love it.

Mar, it was way cool!

DH,the eggs were about golf ball size.

The head with the teeth was the size of a very large horse head.

The feet were BIG. I included the guide's legs for a reference point.
