Build It And They Will Come.

On the road to Lucky Twelve Tavern yesterday for another Outer Banks Taste of the Beach event, Mr. Hawthorne cut through from the bypass to the beach road and we ended up right in front of this beach access.
This really caught my attention, since not only is it a beach access, but it's a wheelchair accessible beach access, which makes me wonder - once the wheelchairs get to the beach, where are they going to go? Isn't that going to be ... oh, I don't know ... tough-going?
This reminds me of a Mayan temple of sorts. My curiosity is piqued, so I have to check it out. I made Mr. Hawthorne pull in here so I could have my digital moments. Now imagine what it would like to wheel chair up this ramp. And up. And up.
Well now, after all that work and zig-zagging back and forth to get up here, wheelchair-bound folks can't do anything except look. There's no ramp down to the beach, although there are steps. I tell ya, I'd be ticked.
But the view is nice.
The temperature was in the seventies today so people were taking advantage of the lovely weather.
Here's the view from the top looking back down.
Check out the labyrinthine maneuvering one would have to accomplish to get to nowhere.
I'd be let down after all that work to get to the top. Thanks to alert reader, Kathy, who sent me this site-link. Well then, dammit, they should have access to the beach.

  1. Au contraire, mes ami, let me assure you that, were I to bring one of our kids to the beach, it would be enough to sit at the top and look, smell, and feel the wind on your face. Trust me, that alone can be a gift to a disabled person.

That said, there should be access down to the sand as they make wheelchairs specially for surf & sand fun. Check this out: http://www.beachwheelchair.com/products.htm

  2. In fact, this is inspiring my next post. But it will have to wait awhile. Going out with the mom & the son.
