Breakfast At The Hawthornes.

Saturday mornings are lazy for me.
I'm not rushed to do anything.
As usual on Saturdays,
Food Network is on in the background
Bamie Deen are on.
And that would be Jamie and Bobby Deen,
Pauler's exalted sons.
I never can figger which is which,
so they're Bamie and Jobby to me.

Apparently, the best thing they've ever made
(I don't know if this was a collective effort.)
is a hoecake.
And this speaks volumes to me.
This is adapted from Pauler's recipe.

Hoecakes
1/2 cup self-rising flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp sugar
a few grinds of salt
1 egg
about 1 cup buttermilk

Mix dry ingredients.
Whisk in beaten egg and enough of the buttermilk
to make a pancake batter.

Melt a few tablespoons of butter in the skillet
and brown the cakes on each side.

Now I loves me some cornbread.
I like the corner pieces.
And I really like the idea of a hoecake
since you have the soft cornbread in the center
and crisp all around the outside.
And this is very good.
But I would not call it
"the best thing I ever made."

I served the hoecake with a spoonful
of Mr. Hawthorne's Salsa Ranchera, which he cans,
a piece of bacon (OK.  Four pieces of bacon.),
and an over-easy egg.

 That's the ticket.
 Oh yes.
Mop that yolk up with the hoecake.

The one and only time I ever had a hoecake was when we went to Savannah and had dinner at The Lady and Sons. I thought it was delicious. Yes, we went there, several years ago. I ordered the tomato tart, which I loved and hubs had the crab cakes, which he loved. Anyway, I think I will make some hoecakes. Yours look fabulous.
