The Hawthornes Have Lunch Out At Kill Devil Grill In Nags Head On The Beach Road.

Back the first week in June Mr. Hawthorne and I went to Kill Devil Grill on the beach road in Nags Head. A friend was kind enough to give Mr. Hawthorne a gift certificate for there.
We've always enjoyed it here. Only a few meals were not acceptable to me - one was a grilled tuna, if you can believe that. If you're a regular reader, then you might remember Rosie's track record with tuna. Let's just say, it's not good. There was another time when I ordered one thing and totally got something else. I rechecked the menu on that, since they'd already forgotten my salad, which I didn't want now with my meal. I'd wanted it before the meal and now that they realized they forgot the salad, they offered it to me with the meal. No thank you. I want the salad first. I noticed the specials menu offered some type of fish Reuben, which is what I ordered but not what I got. I got a Reuben sandwich with corned beef, sauerkraut, cheese, and pickles. I let it go. Didn't think the waitress could handle it. Didn't eat any of it but did bring it home to Mr. Hawthorne. He didn't believe I'd ordered a Reuben. I'm still wondering what fish Reuben would have been like.
Very comfortable, friendly atmosphere/attitude at Kill Devil Grill.
Mr. Hawthorne ordered the Bisonburger with house salad. Mr. Hawthorne always orders Bleu Cheese dressing, but Kill Devil Grill had no Bleu Cheese (??) so he substituted Ranch which he said didn't taste like ranch. He didn't care for the dressing that much. Bisonburger was good. Juicy, not dry.
Onion rings, lettuce, and sad tomato complete the package.
My mahi mahi was cooked properly. Nice touch with the grill marks. What I would have liked is to take away the bread and serve the fish with vegetables, a wild rice, beans, something more than white starch. Give me some colors and flavors and textures. Maybe some light sauces.
Fish sandwich with a sad tomato and lettuce and some nice, crispy fries. You know how I love my extra crispy fries. No white bread, please. Bring me fresh veggies. Fresh vegetable salads. Bean salads. I want colors on my plate. I want happy on my plate. Guess I'll have to do that myself.
And one thing: I find blood veins offensive. The blood vein of mahi mahi is not as offensive taste-wise as the blood veins in other types of fish, but I still want it removed. It's a cosmetic thing. If I can see it, I can taste it. We went back to Kill Devil Grill mid-June to finish up our gift certificate.
Mr. Hawthorne had the fried flounder atop Kill Devil Grill's Seazar - "house greens, shaved parmesan, homemade croutons with traditional dressing." They have a quite serviceable Caesar salad, but nothing like ours. And "quite serviceable" is a good thing when it comes to a restaurant's Caesar dressings. Not half-bad croutons either but I notice they're always stingy with the croutons. The flounder was nicely fried. Crisp, light batter. Tender fish.
I ordered one of their specials - a grilled chicken quesadilla with corn and beans. Color me unimpressed. Look at the thinness of the quesadillas. I was hard pressed to find any chicken in these things. I looked for and actually found two pieces in the four slices. They were smashed little chicken parts, maybe the size of a dime. They were stingy on the corn and beans too. Was that velvet cheese inside? What they skimped on with the chicken, corn, and beans, they more than made up for with the salad. Usually I like this salad. Usually it has croutons in it. This came with no croutons. It was way too much salad. And a gargantuan salad does not make up for the lack of any chicken in the chicken quesadillas. If one of your specials is a dish with chicken in it, then put readily identifiable chicken in the dish. There was no grilled chicken flavor whatsoever. And you advertised the dish with black beans in it. Couldn't have been more than a dozen black beans. On the positive side, the service was excellent. And the place was packed, too. Tea with five pieces of lemon was very good.

Touché, Rosie! Loved your honesty and your gracious positive ending. These days, it seems like every restaurant reviewed is "great" and "delicious," which does not help one bit when deciding where to spend my hard earned dollar.
Wasn't KDG one of the top 100 restaurants in Our State Magazine?

Dear Anonymous, Kill Devil Grill has always been one of my favorites.
Occasionally they don't deliver.

I do get Out State Mag and I don't remember KDG in the top 100.

What I think is a problem with reviews is that the person reviewing the restaurant has to spend Tuesday lunch with the restaurateurs at the Rotary Club.

I, of course, don't deal with that shit.

I meant Our State. Not Out State.
