October 14. Asheville, NC. DESSERTS!

I just had to bump up this post. This is from last night, October 14, at Harbor Inn Seafood in Asheville, NC. Forget the seafood. (Although it's usually quite good.) Mr. Hawthorne goes here for one thing now - Suicide Cake.

I had the broiled scallops. Bay scallops on the chewy side. I prefer the larger sea scallops.

And it's refreshing to know one can still order veggies. Crisp/tender.

Mr. Hawthorne had fried oysters, hush puppies, and baked potato. He's still reeling from the oysters at Pauler's Kitchen at Harrah's Cherokee. These oysters were not that good this time. Why not? It depends on the oyster. Some oysters are better than others. Depending on where they're caught, how they're stored, how fresh they are, and how they're cooked. The best ones are shucked and immediately fried. It's like a steak. A rib eye at one restaurant can be radically different from a rib eye at another, depending on a multitude of factors. He wasn't crazy about these oysters. "Mediocre." Although, we've had oysters here four or five other times, twice they were superb. The other times, mediocre to less than mediocre. But, he was here for the Suicide Cake. The oysters were just a side dish.

Now, back to my regularly scheduled posts, from bear carving, Cherohala Skyway, Bald River Falls, and lunch in Robbinsville, NC.
