Here's dinner the other night.
Green beans from the garden
and fish from the canal.
Doesn't get much fresher than this.

Middle Hawthorne just finished summer school
and is home with Beau.
He and Youngest Hawthorne went fishing
off the pier and provided supper for us.

They ended up with a gar and a black drum.

Fishies fileted and ready to cook.

I went out to the garden and picked some purple beans,
mint, parsley, and basil.

I had some leftover Hollandaise sauce from
Eggs Hawthorne I'd previously made.
I decided to melt the Hollandaise.

Add in some white wine ...

and add a few herbs to it -
parsley, mint, and basil.

Mr. Hawthorne sauteed the gar.

Did I mention these are Magic Beans?
They turn green when you cook them.
Actually, purple beans are purple
because they contain the pigment anthocyanin.
When the bean is cooked,
a chemical change takes place.
The heat from cooking breaks apart
the molecules on the surface of the bean,
exposing the chlorophyll beneath,
which is green.

Mr. Hawthorne made fish and chips.

He battered and fried flounder filets, the black drum, and some shrimp.

Here's the gar with the herb butter wine sauce.
I'd never eaten gar before,
but it's a very sweet, delicate meat.
The fact that it was swimming in the canal just
a few minutes ago and the fact that the Hawthornelets
caught it only added to its deliciosity.

I was wondering about Middle Hawthorne's
fashion statement.
I thought he was channeling Gilligan
but he corrected me.
It's the Hulk.
