Since I've been in the kitchen,
baking all day,
Mr. Hawthorne was kind enough
to take over dinner duty tonight.
He came home with a bunch of turnip greens
and turnips from his visit home the other day.
Turnip greens go into the pot,
along with some ham and sausage and
it cooks down for a few hours.
Then, Mr. Hawthorne peeled and sliced
turnips and added them to the pot
and cooked until tender.
We still have about a 1/2 bushel of oysters
in the fridge downstairs.
He steamed some oysters
and made a plain
melted butter/lemon juice dip.
He shucked a pan full of oysters for me,
since I still have an injured paw
and ain't gonna be shuckin' no stinkin'
oysters for a while.
I topped the oysters with my homemade canned salsa,
then added some shredded Monterey Jack cheese,
and placed under the broiler until nicely melted and browned.
Here's my plate of turnips and turnip greens
with a bit of buttah melting on top.
Delicious.
A plump, juicy little steamed oyster,
bathed in melted buttah and lemon juice.
Broiled oyster with salsa and cheese.
All in all,
a wonderful meal.
Very simple.
And it hit the spot.
Actually, it hit several spots.
All in very good ways.
