What culinary adventures have the Hawthornes pursued
this week?
I'm sure everyone's been wondering.
We love oysters, so here's a lovely lightly steamed oyster (just steamed enough to open the shell).
Needs nothing more than a squeeze of lemon juice, and I like a bit of butter on it.
Since Ticky's and my rather disastrous Slo-kukker arrrusssupeees from this past weekend, I've been a bit hesitant about using my crock pot.
But I thought I'd get back on the horse, so to speak.
Here, I've chopped carrots, celery, onions, and garlic.
First, I seasoned my meat with salt and pepper and a bit of Ancho Chili powder.
Then, I seared it on both sides.

Next, I added sliced potatoes and a sliced white sweet potato.

Then, I seared it on both sides.
Deglaze the pan with
a nice red wine.
This smells wonderful.
Add a bit more wine
to the crock.
Add a carton of beef broth to the mix.
A mere 6 hours later, after krokking on high, we have this.
Workmen upstairs in my house kept commenting on the aromas wafting upward.
Here it is in its
yummy goodness.
I served a very nice cornbread with the pot roast. The adult half has tomatoes, onions, cumin, jalapenos, and green olives. Mr. Hawthorne has been Semi-Ho'ing it by buying the PRE-shredded 4-cheese Mexican blend, so I Sandra Lee'd my cornbread. Normally, I grate my own. The cheese tastes better, but Mr. Hawthorne thinks it's the same. Same with PRE-peeled carrots. He actually likes them. They just don't taste right to me.
The next day, Xmaskatie paid me a visit. We enjoyed the leftover pot roast and cornbread.
Here, I've sliced the cornbread and sauteed it in a bit of butter and olive oil until
it's nicely browned.
Bon appetit!
