I have a 2002 Chevy Avalanche
with a dash warning light that came on
a few weeks ago saying
"Service Engine Soon."
I took it in to my garage of choice
and was informed that my catalytic converter
was screwed up.
I'm thinking, damn,
I just spent $900 on repairs and shocks
and this sounds expensive,
as in another $700-$900.
But wait.
The fellow told me to take it
back to the Chevy dealership
because there's a federal law that says
I am protected from the cost of repairs
by federally required emission control warranties.
He said if the vehicle is less than seven years old
or has less than 70,000 miles,
then I'm protected.
He checked on the age of my vehicle.
My truck turns 7 on May 3, 2009.
And I had 69,859 miles on it.
So, thankfully, I'm covered.
Things don't usually work out
for me so fortuitously.

I had the same problem with the catalytic converter on my Chevy Impala a few years ago. The dealership replaced it under warranty, thankfully, but there must have been something going on with the catalytic converters in the 2002 models.
