My Hawthorne Boys Catch Dinner. In The Back Yard.

On the Hawthorne Boys' last day home
before heading back to school and job-searching,
they spent a successful afternoon fishing.

Even Beau had a great time watching.

Mr. Hawthorne and I sat on the deck
enjoying our glasses of wine.
It was nice watching these boys savor the afternoon.

Kayakers lurk in the background.

Here's the afternoon's catch.
Sea mullets.
They live in both the ocean and brackish waters.
Also known as whitings.

Mr. Hawthorne mixed flour and semolina flour.

He soaked the fish in buttermilk.
Let it soak for at least 30 minutes.

Dredge in flour mixture.

Mr. Hawthorne fried this in 350 degree peanut oil.

Brown on both sides.
About three - four minutes each side.

These fish came straight from the canal to table
in less than 60 minutes.
Doesn't get much fresher than that.
Even the skin was crispy and not fishy.
An excellent repast.

Are there any limits on the fishing off your dock?

We have to have a fishing license now to fish off the pier, which my boys have. As for limits, I can run into my house before anybody sees what I'm doing.
