The Hawthornes left Friday the 13th for a road trip.
We're going across country.
Again.
Entering Hampton Roads.
Hold your breath.
Going through a tunnel.
I hate tunnels.
I wonder where all that coal is going to.
Next stop - Charlottesville, VA.
Well, actually there was no stopping involved.
There's no parking anywhere
and the traffic is backed up bumper to bumper.
But we got a drive-by of the Rotunda
at the University of Virginia, founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson.
The Rotunda, completed in 1826, was designed by Thomas Jefferson
and was modeled after the Pantheon in Rome.
Too bad we couldn't go inside.
This is the Lewis and Clark and Sacajawea statue in Charlottesville.
It commemorates the 1803-1806 journey
of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
We went a little bit out of the way
to see this church.
This is Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton, Va.,
founded in 1746.
I soooo wanted to go inside and see the Tiffany windows,
but we got there at 5 and the doors are locked at 4.
Check here to see what we missed.
I liked the watering can.
I'm trying to shoot out Mr. Hawthorne's
window to get the giant flower pots.
Tomorrow - Lexington, Va.
Safe travels Rosie. Excited to follow along with you.
ReplyDeleteLove Charlottesville! It was a stop on our belated honeymoon 10 years ago! Safe travels! What a pretty time of year for a road trip.
ReplyDeleteSafe travels!
ReplyDeleteThanks all!
ReplyDeleteWe briefly stopped in Charlottesville and the university there umpteen years ago. It is a lovely place. Thomas Jefferson was a man of many talents.
ReplyDeleteAnd do be careful on your travels.
Another road trip and I get to ride along this time! : )
ReplyDeleteMost of that coal you saw is probably being shipped to Japan. My brother works for a coal company based in PA and they ship a lot of their coal out through the eastern seaports, bound for Japan.
Safe travels! vera charles
Thanks again for all your well wishes. Vera, if you scroll down the right hand side of my blog, I have all the links of our last trip cross country, so you can check those out if you like.
